What is Somatic Counselling?
Somatic Counselling is a body-centred approach to Therapy, integrating the connection between mind and body. It will support the process of emotions, memories, trauma and trapped stress through verbal dialogue and bringing awareness back to body with physical sensations and movements.
How is Somatic Counselling different from CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Somatic Therapy are both effective therapeutic approaches, but they differ significantly in focus and method. CBT is a structured, goal-oriented therapy that primarily addresses present-day problems by identifying and challenging negative thought patterns, teaching coping skills, and introducing behavioural techniques to change unhelpful actions. It emphasizes thinking over feeling and tends to focus less on past trauma, aiming instead to develop realistic thinking and emotional regulation through mental strategies. In contrast, Somatic Therapy is grounded in the mind-body connection and supports healing by bringing presence back to the body. It encourages clients to feel their emotions physically rather than analyse them cognitively, helping to regulate the nervous system, release stored tension, and process deep-seated trauma. Unlike CBT's structured approach, Somatic Therapy is often client-led, allowing individuals to explore their inner experiences at their own pace, with support from a co-regulating practitioner. It works with whatever arises in the body, helping individuals forge a deeper connection to themselves and trust their bodily responses to stress and trauma.
